Unobstructed sightlines are the defining design goal of every modern railing system we install. Traditional wood balusters divide the visual field into vertical segments. In an open-plan Maryland home, this creates a visual barrier that interrupts the flow between spaces. Glass panels and cable rails remove that barrier entirely. Frameless Glass Railing Systems
Frameless glass railing installation in Montgomery County is our most requested modern railing system. The frameless system uses structural glass panels mounted directly into a continuous base channel or individual point-fixed standoffs. There is no top rail interrupting the glass face. The result is a continuous transparent plane that follows the stair geometry with no visual interruption.
We specify only 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch tempered and heat-soaked laminated glass for structural railing panels. Heat soaking is a secondary tempering process that dramatically reduces the statistical probability of spontaneous breakage. Every glass panel is certified to ASTM E2353 standards for structural glass assemblies.
Stainless Cable Rail Systems
For Annapolis homeowners and properties near the Chesapeake Bay, 316-grade stainless cable rails are the correct specification. Standard 304-grade stainless steel is appropriate for most inland Maryland applications. However, within proximity to tidal water or marine air environments, 304-grade can show surface oxidation within a few years of installation. Because Annapolis is a maritime entity with a genuine corrosive salt-air environment, we specify 316-grade stainless exclusively for all projects in that market.
316-grade stainless contains molybdenum, which significantly enhances resistance to chloride corrosion. Our cable rail systems use 1/8-inch or 3/16-inch diameter 7x7 stainless wire rope, depending on post spacing and load requirements. All cable terminals, tensioners, and through-post fittings are marine-grade 316 stainless.
Minimalist Steel Balustrades
A minimalist steel balustrade is the most structurally expressive railing choice available. Flat steel bars, slender round posts, or perforated steel panels create a visual rhythm along the stair run without concealing the staircase geometry behind them. When powder-coated in matte black, a minimalist steel system reads as an architectural drawing in three dimensions.
Because steel balustrades are fully custom-fabricated at our Capitol Iron Works shop, every detail is resolved to your exact design intent. Post profiles, spacing patterns, and connection details are designed alongside the staircase, not adapted from a standard product.
Glass Panel Specifications
Minimum panel thickness of 1/2 inch tempered, heat-soaked, laminated safety glass. All panels certified to ASTM E2353. Base channel embedment calculated to resist lateral load at top rail height per IBC standards.
Cable Rail Specifications
Wire rope diameter of 1/8 inch minimum for spans up to 4 feet. 3/16-inch wire rope for spans between 4 and 6 feet. Maximum cable spacing of 3 inches to comply with the 4-inch sphere rule. All hardware in 316-grade stainless for coastal applications and 304-grade for inland Maryland projects.
Steel Balustrade Specifications
Flat bar, round bar, or square section steel posts fabricated in A36 or A572 Grade 50 structural steel. Post base connections engineered and welded to AISC standards. Post spacing calculated to meet the 4-inch infill rule with a maximum 42-inch guard height.
Handrail Geometry
All handrails are designed to meet the graspability requirements of the current IBC: circular sections 1.25–2 inches in diameter, or non-circular sections with a 4–6.25 inch perimeter. Handrails feature a minimum 1.5-inch wall clearance and continuous returns to walls or floors at the top and bottom of each stair run.
